2024 BECE Aggregate and possibly School Placement Expected in Ghana~ghanablogzone.com

Understanding BECE Aggregate and School Placement in Ghana

The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is an important exam taken by students in Ghana at the end of Junior High School (JHS). The exam helps determine which Senior High School (SHS) they will attend, and the school placement is done through the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS)

The BECE results are calculated based on the total scores from the subjects taken, and this score is referred to as the BECE Aggregate. Here’s how the school placement works based on the aggregate you get in the BECE:

BECE Aggregate Categories

1. Aggregate 6 - 10

   - Students who score between 6 and 10 are considered to have performed excellently. These students usually have a better chance of getting into the top Senior High Schools in Ghana. If you score within this range, your first choice of school is likely to be approved.

2. Aggregate 11 - 19

   - An aggregate between 11 and 19 is still very good. Students in this category have a fair chance of being placed in a good SHS, but it may not necessarily be their first choice, especially if that school is highly competitive.

3. Aggregate 20 - 29

   - With an aggregate of 20 to 29, students may still be placed in decent Senior High Schools, though competition for spots in the top schools will be tougher. Schools ranked lower on their preference list, such as second or third choices, might be selected for them.

4. Aggregate 30 - 35

   - This score range is considered average, and students may not get into the highly sought-after schools. However, they will still be placed in a Senior High School. The placement may likely be in a second, third, or fourth choice school.

5. Aggregate 35 and Above

   - Students with an aggregate above 35 may face challenges in getting placed in well-known schools. The CSSPS system will prioritize placing them in schools with available spaces, often lower on their list of choices or other schools that are not as competitive.

Choosing Schools in the CSSPS System

When selecting Senior High Schools, students are required to choose five schools in order of preference. Here's how the choices work:

- First Choice:This is the school you most want to attend. It’s important to aim high, but also be realistic based on your expected BECE results.

- Second Choice: In case you don’t get into your first choice, this school is your next option. Make sure it’s still a school you’d be happy to attend.

- Third & Fourth Choice: These choices are backup options in case your first and second choices don’t work out. It’s wise to select schools that are less competitive but still provide quality education.

- Fifth Choice:  This is often considered a safety net. You are more likely to get placed here if none of your top four choices are available.

Self Placement

If for any reason a student is not placed in any of the five chosen schools, they have the option to go through  Self Placement. In this process, the CSSPS system allows students to choose from a list of schools with available spaces.

This gives them a chance to still enroll in an SHS, even if it’s not one of their original choices.

This will be done in the others five(5) selected choices done during the school selection
